The first few weeks of season were tough....had birds working on both sides of us on opening day only to have two hunters come in behind us and set up less than 60 yards away.  They then proceeded to call every 45 seconds to a minute and pretty much blew every bird out of the area in short order!  The following weekend yielded much the same results...too many hunters hunting hunters and not willing to work their own birds.

The tune changed on May 15th....my brother-in-law and I got set-up a little late (just before light) on a field edge approximately 75 yards from the birds normal roost area.  Around 5:50 we finally heard the first gobble of the morning and it was on from there.  We had birds gobbling to our left about 100 yards away and more birds gobbling in front of us a couple hundreds away (across the field).  Then out of the blue two birds lit up behind us...and they were pretty close (inside 100 yards).  Now we're talking!!!  These birds gobbled hard on the roost and once on the ground...cutting us off in every calling sequence.  They hit the ground about 6:00 or so....and we worked these birds for twenty minutes, with them never seeming to close the gap by much.  The last gobble we heard seemed more distant than the one before...we guessed these birds to moving toward the other two guys we were hunting with.  We decided to shut up and let them go...about that time I looked to my brother-in-law and told him, "atleast Tim and McNelly may get a chance."  We sat there for a few minutes and I heard a stick break to my right.  I turned my head to my brother-in-law and said "they are right here (pointing to the right)."  I no more than got that out of my mouth as a whisper and one lit up, then another.  There were two birds and they closing the distance in a hurry.  I called softly and they cut me off.  Time to let the DSD hen do some work....those birds made their way to field edge and hammered at the edge.  Within a minute or two, and probably 10 gobbles later, we could feet moving down the field edge to us.  These birds saw the decoy and made a b-line for her.  They finally cleared the brush we were set up in and my brother-in-law whispers, "ready when you are..."  A three count later laid two PA long beards in the field....our first double!!!!  The excitement was intense!!!  And to double together was the culmination of years of turkey hunting together and usually only one of putting a bird down at a time.  This was one of those hunts that we WISH we captured on film....it was truly perfect!!!

He is supposed to email me the pics....when I get them, I'll post them.  Two birds....8.25 in beard and 1" spurs and 8.5" beard and 1 1/16" spurs!!!!  Pretty sweet little double in PA on a property that gets hunted...and hunted hard!!!!

Sounds like an amazing hunt. great to hear yall got into a double. you gotta love hunters hunting hunters. Seems like all i deal with hunting around home due to all i have to hunt is public.

The First week of the season i spent in a area i have never been or hunted before. me and a buddie went backpack camping near SGL 12 in bradford, county. The first night, sitting at the camp fire we heard gobbling from all around us. led me to believe we were going to have a hell of a time. we did but the birds wernt exactly on the same page we were. on the first morning we were talking to a pair of toms. they were with hens and didnt seem to want anything to do with us. so what we did was try to cut them off and be where they wanted to go. well we couldnt figure out where they wanted to be at all. its like the birds were just zigzaging through the woods. anyways by the 2nd day we had them figured out. we woke up the next morning and it was pouring rain and cold. my buddie stayed at his tent and i went out to get a bird. well i didnt have to go far. i struck up a bird about 100 yards from camp. everytime i called he would cut me off. so i stopped calling, but he didnt stop gobbling. he got closer and closer gobbling about every 10-15 seconds totalling about 55 gobbles. well lets just say my buddie woke up, got out of his tent, heard my bird gobble 4 times then a boooom. the bird had a 9 inch beard with 1" and 1"1/4 spurs about 19-20 lbs.

unfortanally we didnt get a bird for my buddie but he enjoyed week out in the middle of nowhere.
