These calls aren't like a window pane, they're a very thick piece of glass, some with crystal flakes in them.  You can pretty much throw them against the wall and they will not break, with that said, I wouldn't recommend doing so.  I've never heard of a single person getting "cut" on a glass call.  If your still concerned, buy him a slate call.
