| | I know that the more pressure you put on the reed controls how much rasp you get from a call.I was wondering if there was a certain placement of the tounge that would help me clean up the front-end of my yelps? I've been practicing with the Scott Ellis sig. and can produce all turkey talk with it but, my yelps have rasp thoughout the whole call.I watch the clip with Scott demostrating his call and didn't hear the couarse front-end (which I know I'm not gonna souond exactlly like him).Anyone got any advice? |

| | This one of the hardest things to teach people. From a technical standpoint, to remove the rasp in front note of the yelp you have restrict or hinder the reeds from vibrating. The easiest way I can explain it is as follows. Lay your tongue flat on the call with light pressure. Then push air from your diaphragm(not blow) over the call. Again envision your keeping the reeds from vibrating. Then as you start your yelp, drop your jaw. This will allow the reeds to vibrate creating rasp. Another helpful tip is to lay your tongue on the call flat and then push your tongue forward with the end of your tongue touching the back of your front teeth. Do not drop your jaw and force air across the call. You should be able to produce a clearer, cleaner sound. Once you have mastered this, incorporate your jaw dropping or basically relieving any pressure on the call. This will allow the call to create rasp. Hope this helps.... S.E. |

| | Thanks Scott, pushing my tongue froward then dropping my jaw helped clear it up. I still need alot of practice though. While working on the front-end of my yelp doing it how you said I was able to also produce pretty decent kee-kees on some of my calls that I didn't even know would do it. Thanks again. |

| | Come on yelper101..... you aren't a moron and no one is trying to talk over your head. Scott is trying to help describe what is difficult to do for anyone on a mouth call and that is to master(learn) this technique. He isn't saying it in words that are hard to understand. Just read it and think about what he is trying to say to you.......at least he is on here trying to help YOU and and all others that wish to learn. This site is here to be informative and so that we all can interact(socialize)(hang-out) with each other and talk about/or learn more about what we like to do....call and kill turkeys with WoodHaven calls! Relax and enjoy being here....you are welcomed here....lets not get out of hand...this goes for everyone! Another note about controling rasp.....you can control rasp by controling the call you have in your mouth.....the more sharp edges you have on a mouth call on the top reed(where the call is cut at)....the more raspy its going to be. Thats why, in general, a ghost cut is easy to control with an easy front end(start) and also the amount of top latex can be a key point to control....thus a batwing style call is often used to get an easy front end and then roll over into "rasp"(there is not much top latex on that style call).... As you all can tell......anytime you atart to try to "explain" this turkey stuff(and how to run calls) it gets very wordy very quick and almost confusing! Now, lets keep it slow and ALL SKATE! Mike |
