My 7yr old competed in his first contest at the nationals last weekend. Even though he only had a couple of weeks experience with turkey calls, he had a ball and wants to do more.

Can anyone give me a guesstimate of how many sanctioned events are held in Florida each year? I live around Gainesville, so south Georgia might be an option also.

Also, I wanted to thank Mike and the other parents/kids for all the help. After watching the competition, I knew my son didn't have a snow balls chance, but him getting up in front of all those people alone was worth a million to me.

Jimmy, contests in Florida are few and far between.  So far there are none listed and the Florida State will be sometime in August at Bass Pro Orlando.  Go to nwtf.org and click on "in your state" and then "calling contest" to view any scheduled contests.

Scott,

I kinda figured that was going to be the case. I've been looking at the NWTF site for a couple of weeks and wasn't seeing anything show up. Looks like GA is going to be my best bet, there's a couple coming up that are less than a 3hr drive from here.

I was going to call Tammy and get the Poult and Friction DVD's from the nationals. Are there any more (contest specific) videos you would recommend to get him started?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Jimmy, If there is anything I/we can do to help you and your son....we'd be glad to. I want all the kids to be encouraged with their turkey calls and calling. Hope this helps.

That should be a great start.  Also just listen to as much real turkey footage, (audio or video) as you can...Get a general idea of what callers are doing on stage and copy the REAL thing.....Dont copy any callers.....

He's been getting plenty of that. We have 40 minutes a day on the road and spend it listening to Lovett Williams' "Real Turkeys" CD's. I plan on getting "Tree Top Turkeys" also for some variety. Hopefully he'll be better prepared before Orlando in August.

Thanks for the help,
Jimmy
