I've only been in a couple of contests and had a blast, but i can't seem get rid of my stage fright.Everytime I see some of the pro-staffers I forget everthing I know about turkey calling. Can anyone give me any advice that might help me keep cool while up on stage?

You will always get a little nervous, but as your calling progresses, the fear of being on stage will decrease.

The pro-staffers are just like you, no different.  They started in the same spot as you somewhere 10 years or so ago in a little amateur contest in a school gymnasium.  Everyone of them will be more than happy to help you or give some advice.

Turkey Slayer,

I've been calling in contests for 3 years and still have my fair share of "butterflies" before going on stage. I do find though, that the more confindent I am before I get up there, the less nervous I am. If I've been super busy and haven't been able to practice as much as I would like before a contest, I'm more nervous than if I've practiced a bunch and am running the calls really well. So the best advice that I can give you is to put in your time practicing, so that you feel really confident before you get up there. That should help to settle your nerves a bit. Best of luck on the stage!

Jason

Man, I don't even call competitively, but I know when a great caller ask me to call for them I get nervous just doing that so I can't even imagine getting in front of a crowd of people, some of which are awesome callers, and performing.  Y'all have all the respect in the world from me!

I'd rather be turkey huntin!

I've been calling for 8 years and I still get so nervous I get sick at my stomach. But like Jason said, the more confident you are the better! I always just take my deep breaths and never look at the crowd. It helps me a lot!

I just started last year and called in the KY state and was very nervous because it was my first. This weekend I called in the Grand Nationals (for the first time, and it was my second calling contest) and to me I wasn't as nervous as I was at state. So I agree with both that the more you do it and the more confident you are in your calling the more success you will have. Just don't worry about the audience because most of them are wanting to be in your shoes! Have fun with it! Next best thing to hunting for me!
