I'm new here, honestly I'd never heard of Woodhaven till a week ago.  A friend of mine showed me and let me play with a cherry Woodhaven call the other eve, it was signed inside, but didn't have the "real hen" stamp on the paddle, maybe it's an early model?  Without having the option of playing with a walnut model, before I buy one, which would you reccommend?  I really liked the cherry one, but hate to plunk out $60 for something I've never heard.  Also, are these calls available direct from the shop?

I'm sure these calls can be purchased from the shop... and since you're so concerned about getting a great call for the money, I advise you to call the shop and have Mike run a few for you over the phone so you KNOW what you're getting.

That's not to say that you can't just order and get a great call anyway... because that's what I did... but you will be able to pick that one that tickle's your fancy.

They're all great calls... Walnut and Cherry... but I myself prefer the Cherry. There's reason for this however... because I want high pitch and high volume out of a box call. I mostly use mine for striking/locating birds... I have used it on birds all the way to the gun... but most times use it to get 'em going. The Walnut has the volume as well... but doesn't have near the pitch of the Cherry.

I guess it really all boils down to what you want in a call. The Walnut is a little lower pitched and quite a bit nastier (raspy)... I would say a more traditional sounding box. While the Cherry will ring your ears with incredible realism.

Can't go wrong either way.

I too have the Cherry Real Hen. Around January I bumped into the Cherry and Walnut at a local Cabelas, and one of their "outfitters" said I could open up each and run them. For the same reason as Turkenator, I chose the Cherry over the walnut, since I already had a box that had some rasp to it. I didn't buy it that day; rather I too pondered over the purchase, and then went onto the Woodhaven site to see what all they offered. (And yes, I've become addicted to their products!) To order from them direct, you have to call during the day, rather than ordering online. But once you've chatted with them, you'll really enjoy the experience with how helpful they are! And as I told them, I'd rather give them the money than buy through one of the "big guys"! Since that first order, I've also ordered two friction calls and some mouth calls. All of them were involved in gobblers that become subjected to lead poisoning on a recent trip to Kansas! The guide liked their sound, so apparently they build enough turkey into them that even us "less experienced" operators can bring out good sounds!

Good luck with your shopping, and the eventual useage of your call(s).

I prefer the cherry as well.  I generally use the box for locating or firing up a bird in the mid day hours, but I've started using the box more and more for alot of my calling while trying to work birds.  I plan on adding a walnut before next season as well though.  Both are awesome calls and will work great...so you can't really go wrong with either.

Don't matter which one you get they are both the best sounding box call period that I have heard. I bought myself the cherry and liked it so much went back and bought the walnut for my buddy to disc my garden. That walnut is probably like an older hen but with an awsome rasp. and the cherry seems to be higher pitched with more rasp

Thanks for the replies, I bumped into the guy that showed me the cherry call, yesterday, he knows Mike, said he comes to visit their camp in AL.  I live in WV.  He said he's "pretty sure" that the calls are sold direct from the shop.  I sent an email the other day, and asked, just to make sure.  I'm sure this is the busy time of year.  Still have a couple weeks of season, would like to play with a Woodhaven call before it ends.
