I drive a truck for a living and came in one Saturday morning and stopped and bought me the woodhaven cherry classic crystal on my way in. It was about 9 in the morning and seen a hen and gobbler in the edge if a bean field. I got about 100 yards and sit on the edge of the field and took out my new call and just cluck and purred and it didn't take but about 15 minutes and I turned him a back flip. Right then I became a firm believer in woodhaven calls and will never buy anything else. So thanks to woodhaven calls I'm a hooked turkey hunter for life!

Copperhead II Orange Latex

Does anybody know why the Copp II doesn't have the orange latex bottom reed any longer? High to low "snap"?

I have been using a slate type call for years and have killed several birds. Recently I picked up a new Woodhaven Legend Glass. It sounds good, but I made the mistake of watching some of the YouTube instructional stuff on calling and heard some pros making excellent yelps. They were really emphasized the "snap" when you go from high to low notes. How do you do that? I usually make a "C" starting at the top of the call and ending more toward the center. Sometimes I think I am just not hearing it as well because the call is so close to me. What is the best way to get the two tone yelp on a Legand glass?

Hand Positioning

Sitting in my office early this morning listening to tree top turkeys, an moving my mouth with the beat of the turkeys not making sounds but blowing air. (Just keeping cadences in check) I notice my hand dancing around in front of my face as if a gobblers burning the woods down gobbling at me. That’s when I really got to thinking about hand position. If you think about it, it’s a very crucial part of calling for most everyone. I can’t recall the last time it was discussed or if it ever has been here. It’s an interesting thought. I know you comp. guys have all sorts of positions and movements and I myself have some distinct hand positions that I haven’t seen any one employ. Such as for early morning and soft calling I clasp my hands together like praying hands opening my thumb side enough to get my nose and mouth into, opening front and back accordingly to adjust tone. For my yelping/cutting I turn my hand completely upside down, palm to my mouth with my fingers down the left check, thumb under my chin, and again opening the top accordingly to adjust tone. So what do you do while you’re setting up against that ol’tree trying to sweet talk a turkey??

My practice methods

As everyone knows no 2 mouth calls are alike from tension differences to reed numbers. I fell like it’s important to practice with the calls you plan on using in the field. You need to be extremely comfortable with the call fit and knowing the limits of what you can make the call do. DONT WAIT FOR SEASON TO START PRACTICING. Here are some things I do to prepare. I love getting together with friends and running calls for hours you can really get a feel for tone changes and cadences of others as well as yourself. I also listen to a lot of hen talk during my free times whether it be tapes or sitting outside the house listening to the pet hens chatter. One of the biggest things that helped me over the years is taking my calls to work or places that I have to be quiet and softly working them. So many people like to pop in a call and hammer down for a minute an quit, then complain that they can’t cluck and purr. Now I’m not saying take your calls to church or the library but somewhere you can’t hit high notes and force yourself to be quite, if you put forth the time the end result will be worth it…maybe some of that will be helpful to someone.

Any specials or deals at the turkey convention?

Is Woodhaven planning on having any specials or deals at the NWTF convention this month? I am located in Central Arkansas and have been a turkey hunter for about 15 yrs. I do all of my turkey chasing on public ground in the Arkansas Ouachita Mts and have been able to get one or two birds a year since early on. It is my addiction for which I do NOT seek a cure. I started with a cheap HS Strut slate then moved to a Knight and Hale Ol'Yellar because it was so easy to make clucks and purrs. I can't yelp much on the public ground because everyone else does. I found that clucks and purrs with soft, clear yelps are more productive. This year at Christmas my brother-in-law showed me his knew Woodhaven Legend Glass. I ran it for a minute and WOW! That was the easiest, sweetest sounding call I have ever held. Gots to have me one. My question is this: It comes with a roughed area. The one I played with was straight out of the box. Are they ready to go out of the box or does a bit of roughing with the supplied stuff make it better? Once mine comes in, should I leave well enough alone or rough it? My Ol' Yellar had to be roughed before each use (since it doesn't have a cover).

Thanks BFA

Scott Ellis Signature Call Demo Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e3wYkEp_zE

Hey everyone take a look a my signature call demo video. Had a chance to run all three of the calls this evening. They are all pure turkey. My favorites are the Ellis and Johnson calls. Never been a big fan of ghost cut calls, but the Benefield does kee kee well and purrs great.

Scott Ellis call is just as described: breaks over into some nasty but sweet rasp, cutts like a machine and talks XXX. Very easy call to run first time I put it in my mouth. Sounds like a old osceola boss hen when pushed hard.

Mitchell Johnson call is pure turkey. Tape seemed to be a little softer than the other three. Reeds were set back more than the others and the reeds to seemed to have a looser stretch. I'm a fan of batwing calls and ran the redwing last year. This call does it all: nice sweet rasp on the yelps, clucks & purrs, kee kee, and nice sharp cutts.

I need to run the Doug Benefield call some more and get used to running ghost cut calls. It is simple to run and also sounds great. Kee kee was very easy and it purred like no other.

All in all, this new energy pack is very well rounded and talks turkey. Might have to give the RedZone calls a try in a few weeks.

Hats off to Scott, Doug and Mitchell for some good calls.

easy purring mouth call

What's the easiest mouth call, in Woodhaven's line, to make really soft and quiet purrs with?

Thanks

Crabtree sig. series

Found my new favorite call! Since then I bought a few calls, a couple major brand calls and then the NWTF slate call and the Pro V2, and I love them both. I had to throw out the Pro V2 cause, being new, I didn't know how to properly take care of it. When I pulled it out to practice, it looked disgusting. I was looking into getting one of the new sets, in particular the TKM or New Energy. Any opinions/advice on these sets or others?

Vision which one to buy??

Ok fellas I have a Cherry crystal call already.Looking to get a new call just cause I seem to have to have something new.Going to try a vision now so which call alumina or crystal??Help from people that have tried both Thanks

bummed out over a box call

i went to bass pro this morning to get a new box call. i really wanted to get the woodhaven real hen but when i got there they were sold out.

my old box call just wouldn't cut it for another season so i had to have one today since season opens this weekend.

i ended up getting a pittman box call but it just doesn't have the same sound as the real hen. that real hen box is the most realistic thing i've ever heard!!
