I am looking for pointers on cutting on a mouth call. I have been practicing a more controlled cut. A lot of people sound kind of like a squirrel barking or something. When I am hunting and my blood is flowing I think I am blowing to hard and the call squeals. The Van Cise Sig call is becoming the only call I can cut on while hunting, but it is hard to do the soft stuff on this call when you need that turkey to come in 10 more yards. Pointers from anyone will be great!

Mouth Call

I was just curious as to what different members of the Sting Team say into some of their mouth calls to get that clear yelp or two before they get into a real raspy yelp. I have listened to many contest callers and it seems the top callers always have that clear not or two at the start of their yelps.

I would like to be able to accomplish that and was hoping to practice based on some your suggestions.

Thanks!

Call Recommendations

Thinking about entering a contest in July. Never been in one before and this one has a hunter class so thought I would give it a try. My question is what 3 or 4 calls would you all recommend that I really practice with to be able to cover what they might ask for at the contest. I have a Sadler signature call and 3 reed propalytic wasp that I have been running getting ready for the season. I also ordered a red wing batt wing cutt call, 3 reed buzz cutter, and the blue tape Yargus call should be here in day or two. The sadler call pretty much has me covered on the purr, cluck and purr, tree yelp, assembly yelp, and it kee-kees awesome. I would probalby like something different for the fly down cackle and cutting, and I think I am a little high pitched on this call for yelping in a contest. I think I run the wasp call too high pitched for the stage. Also, I like the sadler call enough to get some more and modify them. what does this call sound like if you put some small cuts in the back corners on the horseshoe, I thought this might give it a little more rasp and be just the ticket for yelping. Just looking for some insight, cause I didn't want to order 2 of everything and although you all make consistent calls, I am sure that out of every ten there has to be one that might have that special sound. Just trying to figure out what cuts will suit me best to really practice with to get into a little comp calling where I will be around folks and really be able to pick up on some things.

Thanks

Young Advice

Season is not to far away now is a great time to start picking up the calls and go to work on them. Its also a good tme to strat learning about your turkeys on what they do ive already have began to see early signs of struttung. I like to get on high spots on my property early in the morning to see and listin to all the animals that gives me a better heads up on what i need to know come this spring. Try as much as possible to not spoke your birds because its so hard to hunt them becuse one they tend to pay closer attention on whats going on and two some tend not to stay around. Alot of you ask "how can i get these hens to leave me alone" well that is an almost impossible task to do but what i like to do is a few days out of my hunting season is to not hunt one evening and go out and hunt the hens I like to see where they are going to roost and bust every single one of them up giving me a better advantge the next morning I also like to see where my toms are gonna be that away I can give him the biggest show the next morning he will never forget.

NWTF Sanctioned Contest...in PA

Any one going to the NWTF Sanctioned contest at Sportsman's Warehouse on the 22nd???

I am trying to rearrange my schedule so I can be there....

calling at Clarksville, In

youth divsion
        1. I use a two reed ghost cutt for my plain yelps, purr/cluck and kee kees.

I have placed second and third in a few calling contest but have fallen short. I have heard alot of positive feedback on your mouth calls and wanted to give them a try. I would love to purchase a few of your calls but am having trouble making a decsion on which two or three mouth calls to try. I am willing to put in the work and practice to make the calls work. The team took first in 4 of the seven divisions (did not have a caller in the amateur). Congratulations to all! Two callers really stepped it up a notch and are deserving of recognition for there efforts - Colby Martin for his win in the US Open Qualifier and David Lee Armistead in his second place friction finish! Both of these division had a top level field of callers. Below are the teams results. I need some help on the last division from someone that was there. I have to say, the calling I heard all of you guys do that day gave me "goose bumps"! From you to Gulvas to Parish. Shane Hendershot was the next guy in line to answer a question when I asked this, "What do you do with a hung-up gobbler". Shane's answer focused more on strategy, terrain, and figuring out why the gobbler was hung up. I guess I should have been more specific with my question. What kind of calls would you throw at a hung up gobbler, specifically if he was hanging out there at 200 yards in hard woods with no obstacles between you and him, and you know that the reason he is not coming to you is because he has his harem with him, say 8 hens. My question really should probably be, "what do you do with a HENNED-UP gobbler"?

Ganer Mountain Contest in Knoxville,Tn.

Hello to Mick and the Woodhaven family, I, Napoleon Howell would like to say that saturday's contest was wonderful. Everyone who I have talked to that has a good purr does it with their throat. (and it seems so natural to them that it is just sickening) I have worked on it for over two years now and I have about came to the conclusion that my throat is just not built that way. To purr I have to flutter my tongue and I can only do it on accomodating calls for this style and still the sound is not where I would like it and nor is the consistancy. It is just hard to get the air flow control with this method. Now the purr that I can do does sound more turkey than a friction call purr, but it is no means that soft content purr that I have heard you fellas do. What is strange is that this is the only call that I can not do. Any tips or know anyone who purrs the way I do that sounds right that could give me some tips. Your help is appreciated. Just to give you an idea of my style the two diaphrams that I can make the best sounding purr on is your alls copperhead diaphram that I have trimmed down and get back deep in my mouth and a Tom Teaser 3 reed ghost cut call.

Thanks

GNCC Finals

1. Fantastic call, if any of you haven't tried it. I have since bought several diaphragms from you guys, but am truly sold on Woodhaven since visiting your website. The prayer request message board was all I needed to see to convince me that these are the right calls for me. Amazing sounding turkey calls and the chance to support a faithful organization. I love it.
Thanks guys. Keep up the good work.

Perry, Ga

Mike,

I was just checking to see if you and the Sting Team will be there next weekend? I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on the subject.
