You're right about that. I was just over 7,000 ft. when I killed those two. Had to pack them out of a deep gourge, and when I climbed up out of there, it was snowing sideways! I could barely see my truck in the distance (probably more than a mile away). The mesa I had to cross looked just like that scene in "Dances With Wolves" when Costner's character was looking through a telescope at a herd of 10,000 buffalo (minus the buffalo). This Arkansas flatlander was sucking wind by the time I made it to my pickup! That was one of the most fun hunts I've ever been on!

Great looking birds!

I'll be in NM around the end of April. I'm looking forward to it and hoping I can handle the 7000-9000' elevations.

I've never hunted that high before. One of the best things about hunting Merriams aside from they're the prettiest bird in the US in my opinion, is chasing them in the beautiful country they inhabit

New Mexico Merriams

My CO hunt lasted 30 minutes the first morning, and I was done. I had driven 17 hours, and was out there to hunt for 3 days, so I drove down to New Mexico, and busted two more Merriams in one morning before headin home. (Yes, you can kill 2 in one day in NM, and they don't even care if it is 2 jakes!) One of these is a jake. I shot him because he looked like a Goulds his fan and rum feathers were so white, and I'm mounting the fan. The long beard was 20 lbs., 9 inch beard, and 1 inch spurs).
